POPO'S STORY

The catchy and memorable name PoPo was derived from the Chinese word “bao bao” meaning precious or dear.

PoPo is a brand under Thien Cheong Sdn. Bhd. which was founded in 1955 by the late Mr Foong Chek Lung. PoPo’s inception was driven by the desire to create something new in the market and inspired by high-protein snacks. The founder wanted to create delicious and affordable snacks for everyone’s enjoyment.

Powered by his unwavering passion and determination to succeed, the business grew in leaps and bounds from its humble beginnings of door-to-door sales to become a manufacturing plant today. The company takes great pride in producing a wide range of beans and peanuts of the best quality and yumminess. The star of the brand is none other than the famous PoPo Fish Muruku Original!

Various products are readily available to choose from, all of which are HALAL certified. As such, there is something for everyone, every hankering and every occasion.

1950s

The late Mr Foong Chek Lung founded Thien Cheong as a small company importing household products and flavour enhancer sold under the brand name Ve-Hoe. He conducted his business personally through door-to-door sales.

1960s

Thien Cheong’s business broadened from product distribution to the processing of pickles such as mangoes, papayas and turnips.

1970s

With the help of modern machinery, food production became more hygienic and systematic. Thien Cheong ventured into processing anchovies (ikan bilis) and making PoPo Fish Muruku Original.

1980s

Thien Cheong started producing a selection of high-quality beans, peanuts and snacks in a variety of flavours.

1990s

Thien Cheong embarked on an overall upgrading of food production facilities.

Having acquired HALAL and MeSTI certifications, the emphasis on food safety and production protocols became even more important as Thien Cheong grew to serve an ever-expanding customer base.

Every step of the production process from the beginning until the end product is carried out rigorously. It covers picking and buying raw materials, warehousing of ingredients, soaking, sorting, mixing/coating, frying, cooling, weighing, packing, storing and distributing which are systematically monitored and evaluated, as well as hygienically controlled.
